"What does the back lighting do?"
It's simply an additional accent light. It is not meant to act as a daytime running light as it is no where near the proper intensity.
SS5 LED Pods: Come standard with a selectable backlight feature with eight different color options. Extra wiring does not need to be installed to activate feature.
SSC1/SSC2 Pods: Come standard with the back light color of your choice whether it be Red, Blue, White, or Amber. You will need to custom wire in the feature. With the C1 and C2, often times red back lighting feature is used on the rear of the vehicle as an additional running light with white main beam being used as reverse lighting. On the front it is common to see amber being used as a running light.
SS3 Pods: Back light feature is available only as an option at an increased price point. As a fog light, you may only select Amber back light. When purchased as a LED pod, you have the same Red, Blue, White, or Amber back light option. With the SS3 fogs, you have a plug and play wiring harness that connects to the factory fog light wiring, and the back light wiring will come with an extension and wire tap. Super easy to connect to factory parking light or DRL wiring.
Elite Series Fog Lamps: Standard with amber back lighting.
Aside from the SS5, the back light functions needs to be wired in by the installer. Yes, this is an extra step but it does NOT have to be something that turns you away from the feature. In fact, it doesn't even need to be wired in right away. It can be as easy or as difficult as you want to make it! There will be a single wire you have to hook up to a 12V power source. The easiest way to enable this feature is to wire to a factory daytime running light or parking light. If you want the back light feature on any time the ignition is on, you will want to run it to the fuse box to a switched power source using an "add-a-circuit" fuse tap.
Hope this answers some of the various questions we have seen come up!
