Like many of you that are considering installing a few aftermarket accessories on your vehicle - we all dread the same thing; the wiring. Mounting bars, pods, etc. is the easy part assuming you have vehicle specific brackets. Its the wiring through the firewall, finding locations for the switches, then taking your time to ensure its done cleanly. Wiring up a few switches can easily take hours. You need specific wiring harnesses, switches, and a ton of patience. As an installer with over 15 years experience, I decided to try to avoid that on this go around. With this new 4Runner, I have plans for at least a few sets of different lighting upgrades, so I was able to justify the need for a system that can control at least 4 accessories.
I was recommended a product called the Trigger 4 Plus by a customer who had recently purchased a ditch light kit for his truck. After doing some research, it appears another high quality product on the market offered is the Switch Pros setup, but at over $600, it's in a different pricing territory. Then you have all the generic products on the market that resemble the Switch Pros product, but we all know how that ends up. I've been digesting all the posts on the 4Runner pages and it appears there are many happy customers using the Trigger system. By coincidence Trigger announced they had a 5th Gen 4runner vehicle specific mounting solution for the Trigger 6 Shooter wireless accessory control system. Turns out it was actually just the Universal Pedestal Mount which happens to fit inside the lower cubby area of the center dash area. Funny enough, I never could find any practical use for this area, so I was ready to commit to this Trigger 6 Shooter system. Certainly more outputs than my current needs required, but you can always find a reason to add more lights; right?
In the custom headlight world, these types of wireless control systems don't seem to be on anyone's radar. Hopefully the information listed below will open up opportunities for many people upgrading their lighting systems. This system can easily support halos, demon eyes, strips, additional projectors, etc.
I used the mounting bracket they have for the 4Runner that sits right behind the main fuse box and bolts to a threaded hole in the fender. However, on the 2020+ models, there is an additional small fuse box that prevents direct installation. Since I have trouble taking NO for an answer, I decided to see what could be done. After removing the two bolts holding on the small fuse box, I was able to mount it back toward the firewall. It was on a slight angle but fully secure. Perfect!
The new mount and Trigger 6 Shooter system fit perfectly. Love the OEM+ integration. I purposely mounted it "upside down" because the power wires reached the battery this way with near precision length after being tucked out of sight. All the new wiring can be ran right along side of the fender; this aftermarket wiring blended in so discreetly.
Besides power and ground, you have one extra wire to finalize the installation the control system; the yellow trigger wire. Some wire this direct to battery to have full control. Trigger recommends against it for obvious reasons. I wired this to a switched power source inside the interior fuse box, same place I have my radar connected too. Now I didn't have to run a wire through the firewall, but on the new 4Runner there is not much space for a fuse tap on the fuse box in the engine bay. Instead of jamming something in where it doesn't belong, I took the extra step. Lucky Toyota has a rubber nipple you can cutoff on the main rubber grommet going through firewall, so it was actually quite easy.
Once the control system, is mounted, you are literally done aside from plugging in your accessories. You can keep the wireless switch panel in the glove box, center console, or get creative on how you will mount it. For the Jeeps they have some model specific mounts, but nothing for the 4Runner. I used the new universal pedestal mount to screw into the dash trim piece. The mount is secure and the integration looks OEM. It is a magnetic base so the switch panel can be removed and you can even place it on the body of the car. I can see this being useless around camp sites, or while I'm out taking some product photos and need to switch between pods/bars!
The switch mount can be hardwired or simply use the provided batteries that come in the switch panel. The individual switches are back lit and you can change color in the app. I chose blue to match the rest of the interior lighting.
The Trigger 6 SHOOTER Wireless Accessory Control System substantially saves your electronic accessories’ installation time! Eliminate the need to run wires under the dash or through the firewall of a vehicle when wiring accessories. It also adds functionality such as an RF remote control for activating installed accessories from outside the vehicle and dimming/flashing functions for installed lighting. In addition, fused circuits with LED indicators notify you of blown fuses.
The included battery-powered RF remote utilizes a universal mounting system that will accommodate round surfaces as well as flat surfaces. Its buttons are back-lit and it is programmable for security or use with additional remote’s. Several Trigger control boxes and remotes can be used together to control up to 24 accessories. When mounted to a UTV roll bar, the buttons on the remote are more easily accessible than dash switches. No straining against seat belts to reach the dash, just a quick reach up to tap the remote.
The Bluetooth App will control on/off and dimming functions as well as flashing when used with LED or conventional lighting. It is simple to set up and allows for user customization. Use the app to “Trigger” lights from outside the vehicle whenever you might need to activate an accessory on demand.
